Sales Tax for Stripe Sellers in Canada

Sales Tax for Stripe Sellers in Canada

Stripe powers payments and billing for a huge share of online and SaaS businesses, and Stripe Tax can calculate Canadian sales tax at checkout. But calculating tax isn’t the same as being compliant — Stripe won’t register your business, and in Canada it won’t file and remit your returns. This guide covers what Stripe Tax does and doesn’t do, then the configuration and monthly reconciliation that turn Stripe’s data into correct filings.

Who this is for

Stripe is payments and billing infrastructure rather than a storefront or marketplace, so it’s the backbone for SaaS and subscription businesses and for custom-built online stores. Stripe Tax is the add-on that handles tax calculation; the compliance obligations still sit with you.

When you must register

The federal CAD $30,000 threshold applies, plus provincial rules (QST and the PST provinces) depending on where your customers are. Stripe Tax can monitor your sales and flag when you’re approaching an obligation — but you must register yourself, and you shouldn’t begin collecting a jurisdiction’s tax until you have.

What Stripe Tax does — and doesn’t

Stripe Tax monitors thresholds, then calculates and collects GST/HST, QST, and PST based on your customer’s location. What it does not do in Canada:

•     Register your business with the CRA, Revenu Québec, or a PST province.

•     File and remit your returns — that responsibility stays with you.

•     Calculate GST/HST for sellers on the non-resident simplified regime — a hard product limitation, and a key gap if you registered under RC726.

Configuring Stripe Tax: registrations drive the dashboard

Stripe Tax collects per jurisdiction you add, so the setup should mirror reality: add Canada (GST/HST) and each provincial registration (QST, BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) as you obtain it, with the registration numbers. Stripe’s threshold monitoring can tell you a jurisdiction is approaching; only your registration makes enabling it correct.

Location evidence, tuned for provinces

Stripe determines the customer’s province from billing address, payment data, and IP — which is exactly Canada’s evidence framework. The implementation detail: collect full billing addresses at checkout (the postal code resolves the province; IP alone mis-assigns VPN and border cases), and keep tax behaviour consistent across one-time and subscription flows.

The simplified-regime gap

Because Stripe Tax doesn’t calculate GST/HST under the simplified regime, simplified-regime sellers on Stripe need another calculation path; regular-regime sellers configure normally. If this gap is forcing your regime choice, run the full regular-vs-simplified decision properly first — the regular regime is also what lets you claim input tax credits.

Subscriptions and the edge cases

Recurring billing multiplies small errors: customers who move provinces mid-subscription, rate changes landing mid-cycle (Nova Scotia’s 2025 move to 14% splits affected periods), trials converting, upgrades prorating. Each is handled cleanly — if the configuration anticipated it. This is where digital sellers earn their reconciliation.

Don’t forget ITCs on Stripe’s own fees

Stripe charges GST/HST on its SaaS-type fees (and, for Québec-based businesses, QST from May 1, 2026) and issues monthly tax invoices. If you’re registered under the regular regime, those are recoverable input tax credits — money many sellers leave on the table.

Monthly: Stripe data to filing truth

Export the tax reports, re-cut them to your filing period, separate any platform-collected amounts, convert currency per the CRA’s rules (not the processor’s), and sweep Stripe’s own fees for recoverable tax. BluTax runs this pipeline for Stripe-based businesses every period — registration, configuration, and filing as one system.

Frequently asked questions

Does Stripe Tax file my returns in Canada?

Stripe Tax monitors obligations and calculates and collects tax, but in Canada you (or your provider) still register and file and remit the returns.

Does Stripe Tax register me for GST/HST?

No. You must register yourself before you start collecting — Stripe Tax can tell you when you’re approaching a threshold, but it doesn’t register you.

How do I set up Stripe Tax for Canada?

Add each jurisdiction as you register — federal GST/HST plus QST and the PST provinces — with your registration numbers, and collect full billing addresses so province assignment is evidence-based.

Does Stripe Tax work for simplified-regime sellers?

No — Stripe Tax doesn’t calculate GST/HST under the simplified regime, a real constraint to factor into your regime decision.
